Eruption History of Anak Krakatau
Most Recent Eruption: March 31st, 2014
Activity of Volcano:
-Constant smoke and SO2 rising out of Volcano
-Series of eruptions from 1959-1963
-Dacite (a fine, light grey volcanic rock made mainly of quartz, plagioclase, and potassium feldspar) bomb eruption in 1981
-1990-2002 had constant, but minor strombolian activity
-In 2007 there were eruption plumes, evidence of strombolian eruptions (repeated jetting of liquid lava into the air)
-Lava flow in 2008
Effects of Eruptions:
-1883 eruption had around 36,000 deaths
-Volcanic bomb impact in 1993 injured many, and killed one tourist
-Because the island isn't inhabited, there aren't many deaths that occur with the small eruptions

If Anak Krakatau continues to grow...
The eruptions will get bigger and bigger, and the devastation worse and worse. In the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, around 36,000 people died, and the volcano blew itself up. From then on, the eruptions continued, and formed Anak Krakatau. Anak Krakatau is smaller than Krakatoa at the moment, but is constantly growing in size at 15ft per year!
